Implant

What is the implant?

The implant sounds a bit like science fiction, but it's tried, tested and perfectly safe. It involves getting a soft tube implanted into the skin in the inside of your upper arm. The tube releases a hormone called progesterone into the bloodstream which prevents sperm getting to the egg.

What are the advantages?

  • The implant is over 99% effective. That means that less than 1 woman out of 100 using the implant will become pregnant in a year.
  • The implant doesn't get in the way of sex and can last for up to 5 years.
  • When the implant is taken out, fertility is restored immediately. That means you'll be able to try for a baby straight away.

What are the disadvantages?

  • Some people find their periods become disrupted as a result of using the implant.
  • Other side effects can include headaches, nausea, acne or slight weight gain.
  • The implant will not protect you or your partner from sexually transmitted infections.

Where can I get hold of the implant?

Your family doctor or specialists at contraception and Sexual Health clinics can advise you as to whether the implant is the best form of contraception for you. If it is, they will be able to provide it for you.
