Termination
What's the process for getting a termination?
First of all it's important that you make sure that you're pregnant. The best way to do this is to see a doctor. Remember, it doesn't have to be your own doctor, you can see any doctor you like. Or, if it's easier, you can visit a Contraception and Sexual Health Clinic.
I'm definitely pregnant, what now?
You should think very hard about the decision you make. Remember, anything you decide to do is entirely up to you and no-one else can make the choice for you.
At this stage you might find it helpful to see a doctor or nurse for advice on your situation. Any health professional will be able to advise you so you don't have to see a doctor or nurse you know personally.
I've decided to get a termination, how do I get one?
To get a termination on the NHS you need a referral from two doctors. You can get the referral from the following people and places.
- Your own, or another doctor.
- Contraception and Sexual Health clinics.
- GUM or sexual health clinics.
- Or, you can refer yourself into a private clinic. Marie Stopes and the BPAS both perform private terminations.
Is there a time limit?
There is a time limit for having a termination. The time limit in Fife is about 18 weeks but you are best to have the treatment as quickly as possible as this makes the procedure easier and safer. If you leave it longer than 18 weeks you might need to be referred elswhere. (The time is calculated from your last period).
