Trichomoniasis
What is trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis is also known as TV (which is obviously much easier to say). TV is a vaginal infection which is caused by a bug which likes to live in the vagina and urethra. It can be passed on to men and women so it's important to tell your partner if you have it.
What are the symptoms?
TV is yet another infection which likes to stay out of sight and so it might be very difficult for you or your partner to notice whether you have it or not. However, you can look out for these signs.
- Vaginal discharge which is thin, yellow or green, frothy and fishy smelling.
- Itchy or sore vagina.
- Men might or might not experience unusual discharge or a sore penis.
How do you catch it?
You can catch trichomoniasis by Having unprotected anal or vaginal sex with an infected partner.
How can I protect myself?
Condoms will give you the best protection from catching trichonomiasis.
If you think you or your partner have trichomoniasis you need to see a doctor or visit a GUM clinic quickly. Both of you need to go to avoid passing it back to each other. You'll both be given a course of antibiotics which should clear up the infection.
